The increasing awareness of working from home has made employees ask for a transition from in-house to remote work. But, making the transition to remote work is not as simple as it may seem for employers. You need to assess the pros and cons of providing remote work to employees. Here are some quick tips to make the right decision.

1.Take Feedback and Define Policies

Analyze the viability of providing remote work and the conditions that prevail within your company. Ensure that your decision to offer remote option to few employees does not affect other employees  and workflows. Consider the needs and policies of your company before considering the remote work requests.

Get feedback from the managers and all employees to define plans and policies for remote work. Understand in detail about the people, equipment, software and supplies required to enable remote work. Even if you find out that the employee’s physical presence is required, do not deny the remote work. Always try to create a win-win situation by allowing the employee to work remotely may be on specific days.

Evaluate the ability of the employee to complete tasks with little or no supervision. Check if he/she has the self-discipline and motivation to work from home. If the employee who approached you with a remote working request depends on the orders from others to complete their activities at the workplace, then he/she may not be able to work independently. In simple terms, evaluate if the employee can manage himself/herself when provided with remote work.

4.Peformance Assessment

Once you start processing an application for remote work, check with their manager and rest of the team on the performance of the employee and his/her communication levels. Find out if the employee has revealed flexibility to fit in with the needs of a project.

5.Situation Assessment

Being an employer, assess the reasons why employees are requesting for work from home. Knowing the reasons helps you better understand your employees. Employees might request for remote work due to personal commitments or health problems or the importance of family. Validating such reasons can ensure that employees stay loyal to the organization and add to the bottom line of the company.

6.Tools Assesment

Evaluate if the employee has the necessary tools to work remotely. The employee must have a computer with required software, an internet connection, webcam and access tools like video calling, and instant messaging tools that helps in communicating with other team members. The employee might also be required to have some important applications to stay updated about the company’s work.

7.Workspace Assessment

The employees requesting for remote work should have a devoted area in their home to do office work. This can help them avoid unnecessary distractions and improve productivity. Therefore, examine the ideal work environment and the home office setup with your employee before approving their remote work request.

8.Decide and Approve

Once you have completed your evaluation process and you’re satisfied with it, conduct a final meeting with the prospective remote employee. Discuss with him/her in detail about the company’s policies, rules and regulations for telecommuting. Include their manager / supervisor in the meeting to ensure that they all work together towards the success of the organization. Also, prepare yourself for the upcoming change in work culture and learn how to make it more beneficial for the organization.
